WomenSpeak Poetry Reading Video

You can now watch a video of the entire WomenSpeak Exhibit poetry reading and order the beautiful companion book on artist Nancy Smith’s website. My poem, “Night Garden,” is read by one of the poetry judges at the 24:45 mark of the video. The poem is also in the book.

Women Speak Art & Poetry Book

My copy of the companion coffeetable book for the Women Speak Ekphrastic Exhibit arrived and it’s even more gorgeous than I hoped it would be. It’s a large, glossy, full color paperback featuring Nancy Smith’s spectacular paintings paired with poetry and prose by various female writers, including myself. My poem, “Night Garden,” is on page 23. The first print run sold out at the exhibit, but Nancy has ordered a second printing and will soon make it available for purchase on her website.

Women Speak Exhibit Reception Photos & Video

Artist Nancy Smith was kind enough to share the following photos and video from the opening reception for the Women Speak exhibit at the FRANK Gallery last month. My poem, “Night Garden,” was displayed beside one of Nancy’s beautiful paintings on a wall close to the pictured harp. Another video of the poetry reading will be posted soon.

WOMENSPEAK Press Release

Portraits, Poetry and Prose of the Feminine Experience

Eternal-Flame-from-the-4-Elements-Series-September-Prompt-199x300

In honor of International Women’s Day, Frank Community Gallery of Chapel Hill is hosting WomenSpeak, a celebration of women giving voice to the feminine experience through portraits, poetry and prose.

The three-day event will include a display of works by artist Nancy L. Smith and written works from women beginning Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. The event will include an artist reception on Friday night and a poetry reading on Sunday. More than 15 special guests will read their responses to Smith’s work.

During the past year, Smith has invited women from all over the world to respond to the art works that will be on display. Once a month for six months, Smith released four or five images of her works and invited written responses of 300 words or less. During this period, Smith received over 300 submissions from 100 women living in nine different countries. From these, Smith and a panel of judges selected 30 winners. Many of the authors will read their works at the March 10 event.

Inspiration for this event came from Smith’s body of work based on exploration of the female form. “During my creative process I discovered my paintings were giving voice to my unconscious inner landscape. They spoke of a wide range of my experiences including peace, loss, angst about prescribed roles and determination to be myself. I invited women writers to join me in the complex exploration of what it means to be a woman today. Women had a lot to say and said it beautifully.”

Their topics cover a wide range including inspirational muses, relationships with themselves and others, migraines and mastectomies, lost loves and loved ones, changing roles, mistreatment of women and the state of our country.

The Orange County Arts Commission is sponsoring this event.
